Whether blood orange, plum purple or siren red, cant-miss lips are the big news this season. Matte or glossy in finish, the new must-have lip is bold and bright.

Eyes are a throw back to the Kate Moss era with a smoky and sultry look.  Green shadow of any shade other than mint should be a staple in your fall make-up bag.  Deep purples and royal blues add a new take on the smoky eye making the eyes stand out and pop.

Finally, strong brows are back.  Paired with one of the bold lip colors of the season, this look can stand alone or complement a more muted smoky eye.  In a nutshell, this season is all about color and daring looks.  Bold is the new black!

As seen on the runway, bright Cobalt blue was a favorite; it really makes an outfit pop especially when paired with basic black. Seen in the picture below, Cobalt blue jackets create a fabulous fall look.

Purple is also a must wear. For a casual look or a night out on the town, when paired with simple accessories it can be positively regal!

Emerald green is also another popular color for fall.  “Nothing says lady-like chic better.”- InStyle Magazine   This trend should be worn with a variety of textures to look its best, like Oscar de la Renta did in the picture below.

To stand out this fall, red is fiery hot.  Wear it when you want to be noticed.  For a seriously stylish look pair a bold red statement pant with softer reds or neutrals.

Glittering gold is the “it” metallic. “And the best part of this trend- no jewelry required!”- InStyle Magazine.  As seen below, it can be suitable for a cocktail party or a 9a.m. business meeting.

Sheer black is another top trend for fall this year! With a little lace or netting and mesh it can be sexy while leaving something to the imagination.

Lastly, fall’s hottest color trend of the season this year is classic camel.  To add contrast to the color, you can add accessories to break it up. You could also try the shade in a simple slip dress like Ashley Green did here in the picture below.

The most important tip for fall this year……Less is more.   So tone down the jewelry and let the outfit do all the talking!

Summer is here, Are You Protecting Yourself From Long Term Skin Damage?

Summer is here, and now is the time we all want to be outside enjoying the weather, but it is important to protect ourselves so we can enjoy it far into the future as well. We have all read and seen many reports about skin cancer and other skin related health problems but many of us still do not use enough sun block or take the measures we need to protect against the sun.

How Much Sunscreen Should You Use?

It is recommended to use a nickel size amount of sunscreen on your face and two shot glasses worth of it on your body. Also, if you plan to be outside for a long period of time, put it everywhere even if you plan to wear clothes or a swimsuit. Finally, it is also a good idea to apply it twenty minutes before you leave or go outside, this way it has enough time to sink in and start working.

Sunscreen On A Cloudy Day?

It is also important to remember to wear sun protection even a cloudy day because the sun rays can still harm your skin and cause health problems such as cancer. Another tip is to remember that just because protection may have a high SPF does not mean that it will protect you all day. You should apply sunscreen to your body every hour and a half for the best results. Last but not least, it is important to remember that if you are taking birth control pills or other medicine you may be more sensitive to the sun and protection is even more important during these times. It may be helpful to consult a doctor before going out in the sun for a long time if you have concerns.

What To Do If You Get A Sunburn

Getting just six sunburns in your lifetime will increase your chances of developing melanoma by 50 percent. This is why it’s so important to wear sunscreen. Mistakes do happen-here’s how to handle them .

• Act fast. If you’re outside and you start to feel stinging, sensitivity, or tenderness, you’re burning. Get out of the sun immediately or cover your skin.

• Cool off. Soothe the sunburn with a washcloth soaked in cold black tea-the tannic acid will calm inflammation. Stay away from sunburn-relief sprays that contain benzocaine, because these can cause a rash. Instead, spread aloe vera gel on the area. You can also take an aspirin or ibuprofen. Avoid hot showers. Instead, take a luke warm bath with Oatmeal. The oatmeal is both a soothing anti-inflammatory and a moisturizer, which are the two things your skin needs most.

• Drink up. Your body loses a lot of fluids when you’re burned, so drink a big glass of water every hour until the intense redness subsides. Sports drinks are also refreshing. Stay out of the sun for a couple days because your skin is more likely to burn again.

• Keep at it. As the burned skin begins to peel, moisturize it twice a day with something basic, such as Aquaphor. Tempting as it may be, don’t peel the skin or uSe a body scrub to stop the peeling. After the area has healed, switch to a lotion with antioxidants such as idebenorte or CoffeeBerry. They’ll help stop cellular damage.

BEWARE:

Leftover sunscreens- We all have last summers sun concoctions in the bathroom cabinet, but it’s a must to start fresh each summer. The active ingredients in sunscreens can lose their potency, so check expiration dates.

Double up! – Don’t rely on makeup to give you your complete SPF protection. Use an SPF moisturizer under your makeup, even if your makeup has a built in SPF such as

mineral make up.

What if I get a zit? Not a good enough reason to pass up on sunscreen. Breakouts are more related to sweating than to sunscreen itself. Use a water-resistant formula if you know you’ll be sweating. Clean your face with a wipe before reapplying. Dove wipes, Mac makeup wipes, Dr. Dennis Gross skin care wipes to name a few. I keep these in my gym bag, beach bag, purse, golf bag, & buy them for my niece to place in her tennis bag. I even have a pack in my night stand for nights I can’t bare to go through my cleaning ritual here at the Grand Beauty spa!

What are your tips for protecting your skin?

For almost a year, I sought relief from a cervical neck condition which caused pain that seriously  limited my mobility, left me exhausted because the pain interrupted my sleep and made it impossible for me to do simple things like turn my head to drive a car,  or pick something up from under a chair.  The 24/7 pain affected every aspect of my daily life.

I tried cortisone shots, Acupuncture, and physical therapy.  Both surgery and Botox injections in my neck were recommended but I chose neither of those options as too invasive.  I had tried occasional massages.  And then I met Grand Beauty Spa Massage Therapist Bruce Harburg. His understanding of the neuromuscular system was impressive.  I felt that he was extremely competent but also caring and that he was truly interested in whether I improved.

Over several months, with  regular deep tissue “Bruce massages” (because they are different than other massages)  and some exercises that Bruce gave me to do at home, I feel like I have my life back.  With this non invasive therapy, I have gained back significant mobility and best of all, the ability to sleep through the night.  I will continue with a massage therapy routine with Bruce because he was able to do what none of the other treatments did.  And the relief continues!
